Cast Iron Sewer Repair

Repairing and Replacing a broken Sewer Line

This is one of several buildings we have come across in Chicago where the builders hooked up the new building to the old sewer line.  This is not good or “legal” and it should have been discovered by the plumbing inspector.  This type of shoddy workmanship is not usually discovered until long after the builder is gone and the homeowner association or homeowner figures out what happened.  We were called in to re-line a sewer since a large front stoop and sidewalk would have needed to be demolished and replaced if using the old fashioned excavation and pipe replacement method making the project financially prohibitive for the building owners .

In the case pictured we had to put in a new cast iron sewer line and disconnect and cap off the old PVC line which lead outside to the old collasped sewer line.                                                                                                                                            There was a maze of old pipe outside some of which we re-lined and some we had to replace completely because part of  sewer line had collapsed. It cannot be re-lined if it is collasped.  This job was 1/4 the price of excavation & replacement due the concrete work that would have needed to be re-done.  Re-lining saves time, energy and  money.

Cracked and broken sewers contribute to local pollution.

When tree roots are present then storm water can enter the system plus sewage is seeping out into the yard
When tree roots are present then storm water can enter the system plus sewage is seeping out into the yard

Did you know that a cracked or broken sewer contributes to pollution in our neighborhoods and water ways?  .

By repairing your cracked or broken sewer you will stop seepage of sewage into yards, basements, waterways and more.  You will also help the city of Chicago or Hinsdale or Downers Grove or wherever you are because when it rains the sewage treatment plants become over loaded and back-up causing overflow into basements and local rivers.   There are two problems happening at once – sewage seeping out and rain water seeping in.  Rain water is saturating the ground then seeping into the cracked & broken sewers and then when the combined storm & sewer system in the city cannot handle the large amount of water it causes raw sewage to back-up into buildings basements.  Sewer repair is now ½ the cost of traditional excavation methods.  Many villages are now being mandated by the federal government to fix their main sewers because of this type of pollution to the local rivers and streams. You may see large trucks in your neighborhoods repairing the main sewers.  The Scottish Plumber uses the same technology that the city is using on the city mains to also fix residential and commercial drain and sewer lines.  This trenchless re-lining system is ½ the cost, takes only a day or so and there is no mess left behind.  It is the future of sewer repair and most local plumbers have not upgraded their equipment or educate their employees so they continue to excavate and replace pipe at a high cost to the consumers who are unaware that a better choice exists.

We have done many residential sewer repairs and most recently we have relined a sewer under a major intersection for a gas station owner and also a large hotel so they did not have to break up the entrance drive and completely shut down the hotel because of no sewer service.

Call the Scottish Plumber today to see if we can solve your clogged, root infested broken sewer with no mess and no fuss.  Trenchless sewer repair is ½ the cost, only takes one day and leaves not mess behind.

Cracked and Broken Sewers and Drain Lines

Broken pipe to be re-lined in Chicago
Broken pipe to be re-lined in Chicago

Sewer pipes  get backed up from root infestation, or from cracked or broken sewer lines. Old roof rain drains can leak into walls of apartments and condominiums.  The Scottish Plumber is the leader in pipe rehabilitation which can take care of these issues fast.  Pipe rehabilitation is also known as pipe re-lining, trenchless sewer repair or (CIPP) Cured In Place Pipe.  Our re-lining system has a 50 year warranty and is as strong as breaking up the floor and digging up the yard to re-pipe with new pipe. Only one access point is needed by the Scottish Plumber to install the pipe liner, usually install the lining through an interior or rooftop drain or a small access hole dug outside. Compared to old-fashioned excavation, this new re-lining system is ½ the cost of previous repair methods.  This system saves money, time and mess.         I

Chicago and its suburbs have thousands of miles of deteriorating storm and sewer pipes; it is common for cracked or broken sewer pipes to creating slab leaks and whole building backups.  During storms when Chicago’s combined system becomes over burdened with storm water the system backs up raw sewage mixed with storm water into area basements.  A similar scenario happens in the burbs where cracked sewers allow storm water to infiltrate the sewers which then overburdens the sewage treatment plants also causing raw sewage to back up into buildings basements. Call the Scottish Plumber today for a FREE estimate on repairing your broken or cracked sewer.

Three Most Common Toilet Problems and How to Fix Them

If your toilet is broken or not working properly, it is very often a job to be handled by a professional. We serve the whole Chicagoland area, including Villa Park, Joliet, Aurora, and of course, Chicago.

Generally speaking, the toilet is a very sturdy contraption, and tends to be pretty low maintenance. Of course, everything needs a tune-up once in a while, and your porcelain throne is no exception. Here is a quick fix for three of the most common problems:

  1. Not Enough Water When Flushing

The quick and easy check to make is whether or not there’s enough water in the tank, because the water in the tank is the water that gets flushed. Generally speaking the water should be at least one or two inches above the overflow tube. If too little water is coming into the tank, bend the arm up to make let more in.

  1. Toilet Tank Leaking

Leaking toilet tanks are a huge headache- not only do they leave ugly stains on your toilet, but they can also ruin tiles if you’re using chemical cleaning solutions. The best solution is to use a temperature valve, which stops sweating by mixing hot and cold water as it flows into the tank. This causes a relief in condensation. The valve should only be installed if the temperature of your toilet tank remains less than 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

  1. Broken Toilet Seat

Nobody likes sitting on a cracked or broken toilet seat- and sometimes you can’t sit on it at all. Fortunately, changing the toilet seat is a 1-2-3 job.  There are a ton of different styles, even electronic ones that will warm your butt and keep you cozy on those cold winter mornings.  You can buy them at the Home Depot or other hardware supply stores, but MAKE SURE TO GET THE RIGHT SIZE!  Remove the existing toilet seat by taking out the two nuts holding it in place- it will lift right off after that. If the nuts are rusted and not coming off, a little oil should fix the problem.

Old pipes, water pipes and drain pipes have frozen.   Thousands of homes have been affected and a lot of families won’t have running water for the holidays. Sewer Gas and What to Do If You Smell It

Sewer Gas – Chicago & Suburbs

If you smell sewer gas in your home, you shouldn’t ignore it. Though It is a fairly common problem in Chicago area homes, and more often than not has a very simple solution, it could also be a sign of a more serious issue.

What Causes the Sewer Gas Smell?

The smell is caused by a gas called hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell) which can be dangerous even at low levels. It can affect both people and pets, and prolonged exposure to the gas can cause symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and sinus infections.

What Can I Do to Make the Smell Go Away?

Often, the smell is caused by something as simple as a dried-out trap in a floor drain, so the first thing you should do when you smell sewer gas is check any floor drains in the house to make sure that there is water visible at the bottom of the pipe.

That section of the pipe is called the trap, and it is designed to hold water and prevent gases and odors from traveling from the pipe into your home. If the trap is empty, pour a cup of water into the drain.

What If the Problem Persists?

If the problem continues, it could be a sign of a larger problem like a broken sewer or vent stack. At this point, you should contact The Scottish Plumber for a free assessment.

Our technicians are trained to track down the source of sewer gas and can often do so with just a visual (and nasal) inspection. But for the more difficult-to-track situations we use a process called a smoke test to safely locate the leak using non-toxic smoke.

Garbage Disposer

garbage disposerOld Garbage disposals can cause clogged kitchen drain lines and clogged sewers.  The Disposal’s blades become dull with time, allowing large pieces of food to get into the drain line and before long a clog occurs.

Clogged sinks can sometimes be taken care of with an old fashioned plunger. The can get tricky when your kitchen sink is made up of a double, garbage disposal, and dishwasher, which are all connected to one drain line.  If this is the case, it is strongly suggested you call a professional drain cleaner or plumber.  Applying pressure with a plunger on this type of drain line can cause more problems than you already have.

Skin care products can clog tub and shower drains

Bio Clean II

Some folks with dry skin types will use lots of oily products for their skin and hair. These products get into the drain and cause clogs just like we would see in a kitchen sink. This did not dawn on me until one of our plumbers came in the other day and told us that the customer he just came from “would not have as many clogged showers if she didn’t wash vegetables in there!” He is funny guy and always puts a funny spin on everything –and as usual we had a good laugh. After he left I got to thinking about oil in the shower drain and realized these oily skin and hair products are probably causing many of the clogged shower drains that we get calls on.

To stop using these products is not an option for our customers. Therefore, the only solution is using Bio-Clean to maintain drains before clogs appear.
